Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, was deeply affected when he heard about the devastating impact of suicide firsthand. During a conversation with Rhian Mannings, whose husband tragically took his own life, the Prince of Wales had to take a moment to pause and reflect on the conversation. Rhian, who has since established a bereavement charity, shared her story with Prince William. In response, the Royal Foundation, of which Prince William is a part, has pledged £1m to establish a National Suicide Prevention Network in the UK.
On World Mental Health Day, Prince William expressed his desire to address the “heartbreaking and preventable tragedy of suicide” by creating a unified national response. In a poignant and emotional exchange captured on camera, Rhian told the prince about the loss of her husband, who ended his life shortly after the death of their one-year-old son. Rhian emphasized the stigma surrounding suicide and how it affected her life, noting that people often shy away from discussing such sensitive topics. She expressed her regrets and the questions she would ask her late husband, highlighting the importance of communication and seeking help during times of crisis. Prince William, visibly moved by Rhian’s story, struggled to contain his emotions, showing the depth of his compassion and understanding towards those affected by suicide.
Following Rhian’s devastating loss in 2012, she founded 2wish, a charity supporting individuals impacted by the sudden or unexpected death of a child or young person. The Royal Foundation’s contribution will support the establishment of a National Suicide Prevention Network, aiming to address the complex challenges surrounding suicide prevention. By fostering collaboration among various organizations and agencies, the network seeks to provide accessible support and understanding for those at risk of suicide
