Liverpool is joining forces this October to make a resounding statement: hate has no place in our city. From 11–18 October, Liverpool City Council and various partners throughout the city will observe National Hate Crime Awareness Week with a series of community events, workshops, and outreach sessions. The goal is to raise awareness of hate crimes, encourage reporting, and show support for victims.
The city’s efforts are guided by three pledges agreed upon by local councils, Merseyside Police, and the Police and Crime Commissioner’s Office. These pledges focus on raising awareness and challenging hate-based behavior, increasing confidence in reporting hate crimes, and providing consistent and effective support for victims. Throughout the week, partners will be actively engaging with communities in Liverpool, sharing information, listening to residents, and emphasizing that no one should be subjected to abuse, discrimination, or violence based on their identity.
Some highlights of the week include Powerful Beyond Measure CIC hosting a community event at St John Chrysostom Community Church, workshops by Everton in the Community through their Premier League Kicks program, and Hate Crime Awareness sessions delivered to Year 6 pupils in schools across Liverpool by Cobalt Housing. Additionally, Liverpool City Council and Merseyside Police will conduct joint walkabouts in hotspot areas in the city center, with support from Your Housing Group and Onward Homes in spreading awareness among tenants and staff.
For those who have experienced or witnessed hate crimes, there are various avenues to report incidents and seek support. Whether it’s calling Merseyside Police, reporting online, or reaching out to organizations like Stop Hate UK, Anthony Walker Foundation, Daisy Inclusive UK, or Citizens Advice Liverpool, it’s essential to take a stand against hate crimes. By coming together and speaking out against these acts, Liverpool can strive to become a city where everyone feels safe and valued
