Amidst the turmoil, customers fell victim to the scam, leading to a deluge of complaints about the poor quality of the jewellery, associating Newman’s brand with inferior products. Newman shared her distress at the situation, stating, “It’s awful because I get calls on the regular from people subject to the scam complaining about the jewellery, and I don’t want my brand to be associated with low quality.” The ordeal escalated when customers mistook Newman’s legitimate business for the fraudulent one, bombarding her with messages, emails, and calls.
In an effort to separate her authentic business from the scam, Newman took to social media and even posted a video to prove her identity as a genuine business owner. Despite her endeavors, the repercussions of the scam lingered, leaving Newman anxious about her online business’s future. The fraudulent website, C’est la vie Birmingham, peddled a tale of a couple named Patrick and Eileen running the operation, fabricating stories to deceive unsuspecting customers into believing they were genuine sellers.
As the dust settles, Newman reflected on the impact of the scam, noting a decline in sales due to customers’ apprehension. She expressed frustration at the situation, feeling the strain of having invested significantly in her branding only to face setbacks from the fraudulent activity. Despite suggestions to modify her business name to avoid further confusion, Newman remained steadfast in retaining her brand, hoping for the removal of the deceptive page from Facebook.
