In a move described by the home secretary as a “ramping up” of the “one in, one out” agreement, two larger groups of migrants have been returned to France. The government announced that nine individuals were removed on Thursday, following a group of 10 that was returned last week. This marks a shift from previous removals that involved smaller numbers of people. With this latest development, the total number of migrants returned to France under the agreement has reached 26, while the UK has accepted 18 individuals in return.
The aim of this scheme is to discourage individuals from attempting to enter the UK illegally via small boats by threatening removal to France. In exchange, properly vetted asylum seekers are accepted into the UK. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood emphasized that the recent return of larger groups sends a “clear message” for individuals to “think twice” about illegal travel to the UK. Mahmood emphasized the need to halt these perilous crossings that endanger lives and line the pockets of criminal groups.
A significant increase in migration via the English Channel was reported on the previous day, with the Home Office confirming that 1,075 migrants crossed the channel. As part of the efforts to address this issue, a deportation flight bound for Eastern Europe was redirected to France on Thursday to offload nine individuals.
