In Preston Crown Court, two men are on trial for plotting to kill Jewish people in Manchester by purchasing assault rifles capable of causing widespread harm. Walid Saadaoui, aged 38, and Amar Hussein, aged 52, are accused of preparing acts of terrorism from December 13, 2023, to May 9, 2024. The prosecution alleges that the men arranged for the purchase and delivery of firearms, conducted reconnaissance, and made plans of attack. The court heard that their plan was to obtain weapons and ammunition to attack a mass-gathering of Jewish people.
During the trial, Judge Mr. Justice Wall emphasized that the case was unrelated to a recent attack at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Manchester. He urged the jury to focus on the evidence presented and to try the defendants fairly without prejudice. The prosecution presented footage showing Mr. Saadaoui near a car containing assault rifles, a semi-automatic pistol, and nearly 200 rounds of ammunition. It was revealed that additional firearms and ammunition were also en route to Mr. Saadaoui.
In a dramatic moment during the trial, Mr. Hussein interrupted the proceedings by shouting an obscenity and questioning the harm their actions would cause to children. The trial also included allegations against Walid’s brother, Bilel Saadaoui, for failing to disclose information about acts of terrorism. The prosecution detailed how the defendants planned to target Jewish communities and law enforcement officers to cause mass casualties. The court heard that the men were willing to risk their lives and believed they were collaborating with a like-minded individual named Farouk, who turned out to be an undercover operative.
Messages exchanged between Bilel Saadoui and Mr. Hussein highlighted their deep-seated animosity towards Jewish people. The court was shown evidence of their disdain, including references to news reports of Jewish fatalities and images of the Manchester Jewish Museum found on Mr. Hussein’s phone. The defendants denied the allegations, with the trial expected to last for approximately 12 weeks. As the case continues, the prosecution aims to demonstrate the defendants’ intent to carry out violent attacks targeting the Jewish community
