TikTok creator guilty of killing woman by dangerous driving

A man who frequently presents himself as a lawyer on TikTok has been convicted of causing the death of an elderly woman in a car accident. Leigh Sutherland, 31, was driving at a high speed with faulty brakes when he collided with a Peugeot 108 driven by Margaret Allan in Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire. The 77-year-old sustained severe injuries and passed away three weeks later, while a young boy who was a passenger in her car was also hospitalized following the crash in June 2023.

Following a trial at the High Court in Glasgow, Sutherland was found guilty of death by dangerous driving and has been detained in custody awaiting sentencing. Known for his peculiar TikTok videos where he often portrays himself as a defense attorney or dresses up as a police officer, Sutherland’s content has garnered attention for its eccentricities. The trial revealed that Sutherland was driving his Ford Mondeo above the speed limit in the area and likely accelerating when he attempted to brake.

A police officer in the vicinity witnessed the collision in his rearview mirror and rushed to the scene to find the badly damaged Peugeot 208. PC Lawrence Meldrum described the female driver, Margaret Allan, as bleeding from a head injury and disoriented. She tragically succumbed to her injuries three weeks later. Sutherland, on the other hand, was seen walking away from the scene claiming he needed time to clear his head, and later blamed Allan for the crash. Investigations showed that the anti-lock brakes on Sutherland’s vehicle were malfunctioning, and the battery was not securely fastened.

Adrian Stalker, the prosecutor on the case, asserted that Sutherland’s reckless driving was not mere negligence but a deliberate act of endangerment. Described as driving at excessive speed in a defective car, Sutherland’s actions were deemed as highly dangerous. Despite being previously out on bail, Sutherland has now been remanded in custody as the court awaits pre-sentencing reports
