Pharmacies facing angry patients over Covid jab confusion

Health authorities in England are encountering significant challenges as pharmacists report a surge in patients booking Covid vaccine appointments only to discover they are no longer eligible. The eligibility criteria for free boosters has been restricted this year, with only individuals aged 75 and above, as well as younger patients with weakened immune systems, being offered the vaccine. Community Pharmacy England (CPE) has revealed that between a third and half of individuals arriving for their appointments are being turned away at many locations, leading to frustration, anger, and abusive behavior towards staff.

The director of NHS services at CPE, Alastair Buxton, highlighted issues with the NHS website booking system when it first went live, indicating that many patients were overlooking the eligibility information and assuming they were still qualified. This misunderstanding has resulted in pharmacies having to administer only the flu jab to those who do not meet the criteria, causing confusion and distress among patients. The National Pharmacy Association has raised the matter with NHS England and the government, emphasizing the need for improved communication regarding the changes.

One affected individual, 71-year-old Paul Williamson from Doncaster, expressed disappointment upon discovering he was no longer eligible for the Covid booster. He was surprised by the altered criteria and likened it to a cost-saving measure, stating that he would now consider paying for the vaccine privately to ensure his protection. Changes to eligibility were recommended by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), leading to adjustments in the criteria for the Covid autumn booster. The focus is now on individuals aged 75 and older, residents in care homes for older adults, and those classified as immunosuppressed, while pregnant women and frontline healthcare workers will not receive the free jab this autumn
