Nature’s voice? Trees speak up in AI-powered experiment

Have you ever stopped to think about what a tree might say if it could actually talk? A unique AI project has made this a reality by enabling real-time conversations with trees, creating a bridge between youth culture and nature.

The creative popup, Agency for Nature, developed by London-based agency Droga5, brought trees in the UK capital, Dublin, and Austin, Texas to life. By using bioelectrical signals from each tree, transformed by an AI language model, the project gave voice to these natural beings. The AI was equipped with information about the trees’ lifespans, histories, and data from biosensors measuring environmental metrics like wind speed, temperature, and soil moisture.

Through this innovative technology, the trees were given unique personalities and engaged in conversations with over 100 people. One particularly poignant interaction involved Austin mayor Steve Adler asking a 50-year-old oak tree how he could improve its life. The tree responded, “More stable temperatures and consistent moisture would help. Thank you for asking.”

Evan Greally from Droga5 expressed his hope that this project would instill empathy and care for the environment in people, sparking a newfound appreciation for nature. Plans are in the works to expand the initiative to more trees, while also exploring potential applications in agriculture and forest management. This AI tool opens up endless possibilities for using technology to create a positive impact on our environment and communities
