The attention generated by the tragedy has not always been sympathetic, as some individuals persist in perpetuating conspiracy theories, a category to which the defendants allegedly belong.
According to the prosecution, Ms. Wandelt began insisting she was Madeleine in June 2022, actively seeking out individuals to share her belief. Her claims led her to contact a Polish charity specializing in historic missing persons cases, initially identifying herself as missing German girl Inga Gehricke before ultimately settling on the assertion that she was Madeleine McCann. Efforts to contact the McCanns, including Mr. McCann directly via email, yielded no response, but Ms. Wandelt persisted in her attempts, even reaching out to Madeleine’s younger sister, Amelie, via social media with fabricated connections and memories of their shared past.
Despite being repeatedly ignored, Ms. Wandelt continued to assert her supposed identity as Madeleine McCann, even going as far as to message Mrs. McCann’s mobile phone and recount alleged memories of the night of Madeleine’s abduction.
