'Psychosis' claim for man accused of murdering Scot in LA

The defense team for Jonathan Renteria, a man accused of killing his Scottish wife in Los Angeles, has suggested that he may have been in a state of psychosis at the time of the incident. June Bunyan, 37, who hailed from Arran, was discovered dead on 11 September with severe neck injuries. Authorities in LA have charged 25-year-old Renteria with her murder and the desecration of human remains. Renteria’s lawyer, Shaheen F. Manshoory, revealed that his client was deeply troubled by the victim’s threats to take their child away from him.

According to a report by BBC Scotland last week, Bunyan had sought a restraining order against Renteria in December 2023 due to allegations of domestic violence. However, the case was dismissed as she failed to appear in court until the following month. The couple reportedly reconciled, got married, and had a young child together. Manshoory’s statement highlighted that Renteria may have been in a state of psychosis during the tragic event and was greatly upset by the victim’s threats regarding their child’s custody.

Bunyan, who studied law at Robert Gordon University, relocated to the United States in 2023. She later launched Renteria Paralegal Services in the subsequent year, specializing in immigration law. Renteria faces charges of murder and desecration, disinterment, and inappropriate contact with human remains. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is being held on a $4 million bail. A preliminary hearing for Renteria is scheduled for 18 November. The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has assured that they are assisting Bunyan’s family and maintaining contact with American authorities during this difficult time
