Nottingham attacks victim Grace O'Malley-Kumar awarded George Medal

Grace O’Malley-Kumar, a victim of the Nottingham attacks, is set to receive the George Medal for her heroic actions in protecting her friend, Barnaby Webber, during a tragic incident on 13 June 2023. They were both fatally stabbed by Valdo Calocane, a paranoid schizophrenic, in an act of senseless violence. O’Malley-Kumar’s bravery and selflessness have not gone unnoticed, as she is one of 20 recipients of civilian gallantry awards, with four being awarded posthumously.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer commended O’Malley-Kumar and the other recipients for their extraordinary courage, stating that they exemplify the best of the nation in the face of unimaginable danger. He emphasized the importance of honoring their actions and recognizing the strength and compassion within our communities. The George Medal is bestowed upon individuals who exhibit conspicuous gallantry outside of enemy encounters, highlighting the bravery and valor displayed by those who risk their lives to protect others.

The tragic incident took place as O’Malley-Kumar and Webber, both University of Nottingham students, were returning to their student accommodation after a night out. Calocane’s unprovoked attack led to the untimely deaths of O’Malley-Kumar and Webber, as well as the fatal stabbing of Ian Coates, a school caretaker. Despite the harrowing circumstances, O’Malley-Kumar’s unwavering courage and determination to shield her friend from harm are commendable, reflecting her exceptional bravery in the face of extreme danger.

In a solemn turn of events, Calocane pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and was sentenced to a hospital order in January 2024. His violent actions not only resulted in the loss of innocent lives but also left several others seriously injured. The tragic events that transpired serve as a stark reminder of the importance of recognizing and honoring acts of heroism and selflessness in the face of adversity
