The somber funeral service for one of the individuals killed in the recent synagogue attack in Manchester drew hundreds of mourners. Family, members of the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation, including Rabbi Daniel Walker, and other members of the Jewish community gathered in Pendlebury, Salford, to pay their respects to Melvin Cravitz, aged 66. The cemetery forecourt was filled with mourners, some even standing outside the prayer hall in the rain, listening to the service and eulogy via loudspeakers. Mr. Cravitz tragically lost his life after an assailant rammed a car into and stabbed worshippers who were gathering for a service on Yom Kippur – the holiest day in the Jewish calendar at Heaton Park Synagogue.
Following the service, Rob Kantor, the synagogue’s vice president, remembered Mr. Cravitz as a “loving, charismatic, humorous man who always had good intentions and cherished his community and family.” He emphasized the importance of unity and spreading goodness in the wake of such a tragic event. Hannah Salomon, another acquaintance of Mr. Cravitz, highlighted how he fostered a sense of family among everyone he met, emphasizing their interconnectedness and how he embodied these values.
In a tribute released by his family, it was said that Mr. Cravitz was always willing to lend a helping hand and was known for his kindness and interest in getting to know people. Neighbors and friends echoed these sentiments, recalling how he always had a smile on his face and was friendly to everyone he encountered. The tragic loss of Mr. Cravitz has deeply affected those who knew him, leaving a void in the community. The other victim of the attack, Adrian Daulby, was also remembered fondly as a hero and a beloved family member.
As the investigation into the attack continues, two men and two women are currently in custody on suspicion of terrorism offenses. While two other individuals have been released without further action. This tragic incident has left the community in mourning and seeking justice for the victims of this senseless act of violence
