A spokesperson for PPE Medpro revealed that a company linked to Baroness Mone and her husband, Doug Barrowman, transferred the majority of the funds it received from the government for personal protective equipment (PPE) to other firms. Notably, on Wednesday, a judge mandated PPE Medpro to reimburse £122m since the gowns supplied did not meet sterility certification standards. Nevertheless, the spokesperson highlighted that £83m was distributed to other companies, suggesting a strong case for the administrator to pursue these firms for the funds.
Additionally, Health Secretary Wes Streeting expressed determination to recover all possible amounts. When Mr. Barrowman conversed with the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg in 2023, he detailed the establishment of PPE Medpro as a consortium with companies named Loudwater Trade and Finance and Eric Beare Associates. He emphasized that the British government favored trading with UK-based businesses, prompting the formation of PPE Medpro to cater to government PPE needs.
Baroness Mone, leveraging her connections as a Conservative peer, facilitated the company’s entry into the government’s “VIP lane” for exclusive access to contracts. The spokesperson for PPE Medpro noted that the company did not directly engage in technical tasks like liaising with Chinese manufacturers or ensuring quality and sterility levels. Following legal action by the government, the other consortium members distanced themselves from PPE Medpro, resorting to legal representatives for communication.
A recent court ruling directed PPE Medpro to repay £122m to the Department of Health and Social Care for failing to meet sterility certification standards with supplied gowns. Subsequently, the company commenced the administration process to eventually wind up and allocate funds to creditors. Despite slim assets amounting to £666,000, cooperative arrangements between the government and administrators are anticipated. While some officials urge Baroness Mone to personally reimburse the funds, inquiries from the National Crime Agency into the case suggest potential further investigations into consortium members
