The attempt to extort a nursery chain by hackers through posting stolen images and data about children on the darknet seems to have taken an unexpected turn. The criminals initially began posting profiles of the children on their website, threatening to continue until a ransom in Bitcoin was paid. They also went as far as contacting parents directly with threatening phone calls, trying to force their hand into paying.
However, public backlash seems to have pushed the hackers to backtrack on their actions. Initially blurring the images but keeping the data online, they have now removed all the information and issued an apology for their behavior. This change of heart has been met with skepticism from experts, who believe it is more about self-preservation than genuine remorse for their actions.
According to the hackers, they have deleted all the data they obtained, which included private details and pictures of approximately 8,000 children, as well as contact information for parents and caregivers. Despite the hackers claiming to have deleted everything, there is always the possibility that they may still retain copies or sell the data. Past cases have shown that hackers are not always truthful about deleting stolen data even after receiving ransom payments.
The hackers, operating under the name Radiant, have expressed regret for their actions, stating that they are sorry for causing distress to children. Their darknet site appears to be newly created, and they seem to be a relatively inexperienced group. It is unclear who exactly is behind the hacking group, but they have admitted to carrying out other hacks in the past. While Kido, the targeted nursery chain, has not paid the ransom, the hackers have seemingly abandoned their extortion attempt, resulting in a financial loss for them
