William may have been target of Mail publisher blagging, Harry's lawyer says

Lawyers representing Prince Harry have raised concerns that the Prince and Princess of Wales may have been subjected to illicit information gathering by the Daily Mail’s publisher, during a preliminary hearing at the High Court. Prince William’s 21st birthday celebration details were potentially obtained through deceitful means by a private investigator, while it seemed that Catherine’s mobile phone may have been a target as well. Alongside Prince Harry, other public figures such as Sir Elton John, Baroness Doreen Lawrence, and Elizabeth Hurley have accused Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL) of serious breaches of privacy.

Allegations against ANL include claims of invading homes, hacking phones, and dishonestly acquiring medical and financial data. An invoice labelled ‘Out of Africa Story Royal Party Enqs’ from August 2003 hinted at possible dishonest operations in gathering extensive information for a Daily Mail report on Prince William’s birthday party. Lawyer David Sherborne mentioned a journalist allegedly commissioning a private investigator to obtain a “mobile phone conversation” regarding Catherine and phone numbers from a “family and friends” list.

Debates during the hearing revolved around the inclusion of allegations for the upcoming trial in early 2026. Lawyers for ANL argued for the removal of certain claims, citing them as general and unrelated to the specific case at hand. On the other hand, Prince Harry’s legal team maintained that dismissing certain parts of the claim would be unjust. The hearing, scheduled for two days, is expected to conclude soon, with a decision to follow at a later date. The trial, set for January, could extend up to nine weeks, involving various complex legal arguments and evidence from both sides.

In 2022, Prince Harry and several others initiated legal proceedings against ANL, uncovering alleged unlawful practices dating back decades. Despite ANL’s attempts in 2023 to dismiss the case on grounds of timing, the claimants were successful in highlighting new evidence that emerged over time. ANL has vehemently refuted the allegations, asserting that the claims are baseless and present an unfair portrayal of their journalists’ integrity. Previously, ANL stated that the stories in question were products of responsible journalism and stressed their commitment to ethical practices. This legal battle adds to a series of lawsuits in which Prince Harry has taken action against newspaper publishers over privacy violations
