UK government urged to strip Michelle Mone of peerage

This follows a Covid contract scandal involving a company linked to Mone and her husband, Doug Barrowman, which has been ordered to repay £122m to the UK government for breaching an NHS contract. The company, PPE Medpro, was awarded deals to supply 25 million medical gowns during the pandemic.

SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn has urged Labour ministers to remove Mone’s title through an act of parliament. The UK government has welcomed the court ruling and plans to recover the money from PPE Medpro. Mone initially denied being linked to the firm, but later admitted to lying about her involvement. Flynn emphasized the importance of returning the money to the public purse and holding Mone accountable for her actions.

Baroness Mone of Mayfair was appointed by former Prime Minister David Cameron in 2015 and was given the title of “entrepreneurship tsar”. She has since been stripped of the Conservative whip and is currently on leave from the House of Lords. A High Court judge has ordered PPE Medpro to repay the money owed to the Department of Health and Social Care, with Mone describing the ruling as an “establishment win”. Legislation to remove peerages has not been introduced since 1917, but there is an ongoing National Crime Agency investigation into Medpro for suspected criminal offences related to the procurement of PPE
