John Roberts, known for his straightforward manner, took on the challenge of starting AO after a £1 bet with a friend. Fast forward 25 years, and he has turned his business into a £564m UK empire specializing in a wide range of household appliances. As the founder and chief executive, Roberts has steered the company’s growth from scratch to now employing around 3,000 individuals in the UK.
Despite overcoming a slump in trade due to the Covid-19 pandemic and facing challenges with international expansion, AO has recently achieved impressive financial success. The company launched its first share buyback and revised its profit forecast for the full year. Roberts emphasizes the need for support from the government to fuel business growth and job creation.
While Roberts acknowledges the personal impact of rising individual taxation rates, he is more concerned about the challenges facing young people today. He criticizes the government for neglecting young people’s needs, suggesting that politicians prioritize issues that garner votes. Roberts believes that the lack of investment in facilities and opportunities for disadvantaged youth is contributing to a national crisis. Despite anticipating an economic recession, he remains motivated and optimistic about seizing opportunities for growth and success in the future
