A Liverpool pub recently faced a substantial financial penalty of nearly £30,000 for breaching food safety regulations. The Richmond Tavern on Church Road in Wavertree came under scrutiny from Environmental Health officers in January 2024 after a complaint was lodged. The inspection revealed a troubling infestation of mice and their droppings, which led to the establishment being shut down and receiving a zero-star food hygiene rating.
Issues of inadequate pest control were observed during the visit, with mouse droppings scattered throughout the kitchen and dining areas, including on various surfaces and utensils. The presence of gaps and holes in the building was identified as a point of entry for rodents. Such unhygienic conditions prompted the immediate closure of the pub/restaurant due to the imminent health risks posed by the infestation.
Mice and rats are carriers of harmful bacteria like salmonella and listeria, which can cause severe illnesses in vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, immunocompromised individuals, and pregnant women. The lack of cleanliness behind cooking equipment, coupled with inaccurate records and a failure to adhere to pest control advice, exacerbated the situation. Following the closure, the establishment captured 20 mice, confirming a high level of rodent activity.
After implementing necessary remedial measures, the Richmond Tavern was deemed fit to reopen by environmental health officers. Subsequent inspections in July 2024 resulted in the pub/restaurant earning a five-star hygiene rating. In a court hearing at Sefton Magistrates Court, the operators, Mitchells and Butler Leisure Retail Ltd, were fined £22,000 along with costs totaling £7,702.35 for violating food safety and hygiene regulations. Councillor Laura Robertson-Collins emphasized the importance of maintaining food safety standards to prevent illnesses and expressed satisfaction with the severity of the penalties imposed and the subsequent improvements in hygiene practices at the premises
