Victims of foster carer abuse could get £1m payout

In a troubling turn of events, two Scottish councils are facing potential payouts exceeding £1m in compensation for individuals who endured “severe” abuse while under the care of their foster parents. Legal representatives for two of the victims have already secured £775,000 from Aberdeenshire Council, with anticipation that eight additional cases against both Aberdeenshire Council and Aberdeen City Council will also be resolved. Laura Connor from Thompsons Solicitors indicated that the final total compensation is expected to surpass the £1m mark.

The abuse in question transpired in three separate foster care residences located in the north east of Scotland. One of the perpetrators, John Sinclair, was sentenced to nine years in prison in August 2022 for committing sexual offenses against girls in Aberdeenshire during the 1970s and 80s. Sinclair, who was 72 at the time, faced a total of 11 charges including assault, rape, and lewd behavior, leading to his imprisonment at the High Court
