Digital IDs should carry the Welsh flag, says first minister

The request for incorporating the Welsh flag on digital IDs for Welsh citizens has been voiced by Eluned Morgan, the first minister. Currently, passports and driver’s licenses do not display the Welsh flag, although driver’s licenses in Wales are officially bilingual. Morgan also highlighted that Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar MSP is advocating for the Scottish flag to be featured on digital IDs for Scottish individuals.

The UK government, based in Westminster, has unveiled plans to implement a national digital ID system, with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer emphasizing its role in enhancing border security. The digital IDs will be stored on smartphones and will serve as proof of an individual’s right to reside and work in the UK. The introduction of this system is part of the government’s efforts to address illegal immigration by requiring all working adults in the UK to possess a digital ID card.

As part of the digital ID scheme, personal details such as name, residency status, date of birth, nationality, and a photograph will be included in the digital card. This initiative aims to make it more challenging for individuals without legal status to secure employment. While possessing the digital ID will be mandatory for working adults, it will not be compulsory to carry it on a daily basis. The government intends to roll out the ID scheme before the next UK general election, scheduled to take place no later than August 2029.

In a separate development, Eluned Morgan emphasized the necessity for increased funding from Keir Starmer to support Welsh Labour in the upcoming Senedd elections. Expressing concerns over Welsh Labour’s position in recent opinion polls, Morgan mentioned the party’s ranking behind Plaid Cymru and Reform UK. She stated that discussions with the prime minister regarding additional financial support for Wales are ongoing, as she believes it is crucial for Welsh Labour’s success in the upcoming elections
