The BBC News NI political editor, Enda McClafferty, reported that Sinn Féin president Mary Lou McDonald issued a firm warning against any attempt by the British government to impose identity cards on Irish citizens in Northern Ireland. Speaking at an event held by her party during the Labour Party conference in Liverpool, McDonald criticized the proposal as a “ham-fisted” plan that failed to consider the impact on the people of Northern Ireland.
Describing the proposed “BritCard” as a “ludicrous proposition,” McDonald asserted that no government had the authority to enforce it on Irish citizens. Emphasizing that the right of citizens in Northern Ireland to identify as Irish was a fundamental aspect of the Good Friday Agreement, she urged Keir Starmer to reevaluate the plan before moving forward.
In addition to her stance on identity cards, McDonald challenged both the British and Irish governments for neglecting the issue of Irish unity. She accused them of disregarding their commitment to holding referendums on the matter and called for immediate action to address the calls for Irish unity.
