George Galloway, a former Member of Parliament, and his wife were detained by counter-terrorism police at Gatwick Airport. The Workers Party of Britain (WPB) reported that their leader and the party’s deputy chair were stopped on Saturday morning upon their return to the UK from Moscow via Abu Dhabi. Both individuals, a man in his 70s and a woman in her 40s, were stopped under the Counter Terrorism and Border Security Act by counter-terrorism officers from the Metropolitan Police, although they were not arrested and were allowed to continue on their journey.
The WPB released a statement denouncing the incident as “politically motivated intimidation” and emphasized the importance of freedom of speech, which they claimed is being disregarded. The stops were made under schedule 3 of the Counter-Terrorism and Border Security Act 2019, granting officers the authority to detain individuals at ports or border areas to investigate potential hostile activities. While it is unclear if any personal information, including device passwords, was requested from Galloway and his wife, the Met Police confirmed that they were not arrested and were permitted to proceed.
Following the event, the Workers Party of Britain was informed that George Galloway and his wife had been detained at Gatwick by police, only to be released without charge later on. The party asserted that there was no basis for any charges to be brought against them, and criticized the handling of the situation as an attempt to intimidate political opponents who are against potential conflicts with Russia and China. Galloway, who previously served as a Labour MP before becoming an independent and Respect Party MP, won a by-election in Rochdale in March 2024 to become the WPB’s first MP, ultimately losing the seat in the general election later that year
