Two individuals tragically lost their lives while attempting to cross the English Channel in the early hours of Saturday, as reported by French officials to AFP news agency. The incident took place off the coast of northern France, where approximately 100 people embarked on a perilous journey to reach the UK using a makeshift boat.
Among the group, 60 individuals were successfully rescued and are currently receiving assistance from civil protection services, revealed French official Isabelle Fradin-Thirode, cited by AFP. A family, including a couple and their child, were hospitalized in Boulogne due to suffering from moderate hypothermia in the aftermath of the attempted crossing.
Media outlet La Voix Du Nord disclosed that the two deceased individuals were identified as Somali women. The tragic event occurred south of the Neufchâtel-Hardelot beaches in the Pas-de-Calais region. This year alone, at least 25 lives have been lost in pursuit of crossing the treacherous waters of the English Channel in small boats.
AFP recently witnessed a large group of migrants congregating in the Gravelines area of northern France, preparing to embark on the Channel crossing as soon as weather conditions permitted. The dangers of such journeys were further highlighted earlier in the month when three individuals perished, likely due to a crush on the bottom of a crowded boat, off the coast of Calais during a similar attempt. The UK government has faced mounting criticism regarding the influx of small boat crossings and asylum seeker applications, prompting collaborative efforts with France to implement a “one in, one out” returns agreement to deter such risky ventures
