The UK government has revealed plans to implement a digital ID system throughout the country, with the intention of enhancing border security. The primary objective behind the introduction of digital IDs is to confirm an individual’s right to reside and work in the UK. These digital IDs will be app-based and stored on smartphones, akin to the NHS App or digital bank cards. Details such as residency status, name, date of birth, nationality, and a photograph will be included in the digital ID. Prime Minister Sir Keir emphasized that working in the UK will be prohibited without a digital ID, as it will make it more difficult for individuals without status to secure employment.
Digital IDs will be mandatory for all UK citizens and legal residents who wish to work, but optional for non-working individuals such as students or pensioners. However, it will not operate as a conventional identity card that must be carried in public. The government has clarified that digital IDs will not be required for accessing healthcare or welfare benefits, although they will integrate with some government services to simplify applications and reduce fraud.
The government has assured that the digital ID system will accommodate individuals without smartphones, passports, or reliable internet access, ensuring inclusivity. A public consultation, expected to launch later this year, will explore alternatives like physical documents or face-to-face support for groups such as older individuals or the homeless.
