Tree of the Year: Glasgow's Argyle Street Ash wins title

In a surprising turn of events, Glasgow’s Argyle Ash has been declared as the Tree of the Year for 2025, following a public nomination as a wildcard entry in the competition. The ash tree, located on a bustling street in Glasgow, emerged victorious after a public vote organized by the Woodland Trust. The theme for this year’s competition was “rooted in culture,” with the Argyle Street Ash beating out other contenders such as an oak believed to have inspired Virginia Woolf and a lime representing peace in Northern Ireland.

The Argyle Street Ash was championed by David Treanor, an arborist from Glasgow who has been caring for the tree for the past five years. Treanor highlighted a reference to the tree in a 1951 book by journalist James Cowan, describing it as “quite the most graceful ash I have seen.” The tree holds a special place in the hearts of locals, with stories of people meeting underneath it, hailing taxis to the “big tree on Argyle Street,” and hosting Gaelic music events at the pub opposite where a framed quote about the tree hangs.

As the winner of the competition, the Argyle Street Ash will now represent the UK in the European Tree of the Year finals in early 2026. The Glasgow tree narrowly edged out the King of Limbs Oak, which inspired a Radiohead album, and the Lonely Tree by Llyn Padarn lake in North Wales. This victory is not only a celebration of the Argyle Street Ash but also a recognition of the importance of urban trees in our cultural landscape. The Woodland Trust emphasized that trees play a crucial role in shaping our cultural heritage and encouraged people to appreciate and learn more about their significance.

Laura Chow, the head of charities at People’s Postcode Lottery, praised the Glasgow tree as a deserving winner, highlighting the deep connection these trees have with their communities and broader cultural history. This marks the second consecutive year that a Scottish tree has claimed the Tree of the Year title, continuing a legacy of honoring remarkable trees across the UK. The Argyle Street Ash now joins a prestigious list of prior winners, including trees from locations such as Wrexham, Liverpool, and West Yorkshire
