An investigation has been launched into a street artist who painted a controversial mural on a listed block of flats, which has caused distress among residents. The artwork, titled “falling in love,” depicts a couple falling from the top of the building and was created by The Rebel Bear with permission from City of Edinburgh Council. However, the residents of Cables Wynd House, where the mural was painted, were not consulted beforehand and have objected to its content.
The mural, featuring a man in a dark suit kissing a woman in a red dress as they fall through the air, received planning consent in April on the condition that the artist also obtained permission from the private residents and tenants of the block. The Cables Wynd House Residents Group rejected the plans, describing the work as distressing due to its perceived associations with suicide and domestic violence. Despite this, the artist proceeded to paint the mural without the consent of the residents, sparking outrage among the community.
The residents group has called for a police investigation into the incident, stating that the artist’s actions have triggered painful memories and caused distress among those living in the area. The Rebel Bear, known as the “Scottish Banksy,” gained fame during lockdown for his Covid-inspired artwork, but has faced criticism for this latest piece. The council has announced plans to remove the mural, which will be painted over in the meantime while alternative removal methods are explored.
Historic Environment Scotland granted category A-listed status to the Banana Flats in 2017, recognizing them as a prime example of Scottish brutalism. Police Scotland is currently conducting inquiries into the incident, while the council has emphasized the importance of obtaining all necessary consents before undertaking such projects to ensure public safety.
