The driver who transported the Southport killer to the dance class where he killed three children expressed remorse for not contacting the authorities sooner. Gary Poland, the taxi driver, admitted that he only called the police 50 minutes after the attack, as he drove away in a state of panic. During the Southport Inquiry held at Liverpool Town Hall, it was revealed that Poland mistook the loud bangs he heard after dropping off Axel Rudakubana for gunshots.
The tragic incident resulted in the deaths of Alice Aguiar, nine, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and Bebe King, six, while eight other girls and two adults sustained injuries. Poland recounted how the attacker refused to pay for the taxi, went into a building, and then the loud bangs followed. Despite hearing the victims screaming, he described being in a state of fear, shock, and panic which dictated his actions.
Nicholas Moss KC, counsel to the inquiry, highlighted Poland’s statement to the police, detailing his observations during the chaotic scene. The dashcam footage from Poland’s taxi captured the terrifying moments as girls ran alongside the vehicle in panic. In reflection, Poland admitted that he should have stopped once he was out of harm’s way on Hart Street and immediately contacted the police. The inquiry also revealed details of a phone call where Poland mentioned the attacker possibly having a gun but did not express concern for the girls, a fact that he deemed unfair during questioning.
The haunting memory of the attacker’s face has plagued Poland, admitting that he struggles to sleep at night with the image constantly in his mind. The inquiry is ongoing as more details about the tragic event are brought to light, shedding further insight into the harrowing experience for all involved
