BBC and news agencies launch film calling on Israel to allow foreign journalists into Gaza

The plea for international journalists to be allowed access into Gaza has been amplified by the BBC and three major news agencies. In a joint effort with Agence France-Presse (AFP), the Associated Press (AP), and Reuters, a short film was released calling for Israel to permit foreign journalists entry into Gaza. Narrated by seasoned BBC journalist David Dimbleby, the film stresses the importance of international journalists working alongside their Palestinian counterparts to share accurate information with the world.

Restrictions on entry to Gaza have been enforced by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) since the launch of Israel’s offensive in 2023 after the Hamas attacks on October 7th. While the IDF claims to accompany journalists for their safety in Gaza, independent access for foreign journalists has been severely limited. Last year, Israel’s High Court of Justice upheld the restrictions on security grounds, justifying the ban on foreign media entry into Gaza.

BBC News CEO Deborah Turness emphasized the urgent need for international journalists to be allowed into Gaza to report on the ongoing conflict. The film premiered in New York at an event hosted by the Committee to Protect Journalists during the United Nations General Assembly. It features historic events and atrocities captured by journalists around the world, highlighting the importance of diverse media coverage in conflict zones. While journalists risk their lives daily to report from regions like Ukraine, the lack of international presence in Gaza limits the world’s understanding of the situation.

News organizations have repeatedly called for Israel to grant entry to foreign journalists in Gaza, expressing concern for the dire circumstances faced by journalists in the territory. The UN Human Rights Office reported that 248 Palestinian journalists have been killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza. Despite denials from Israel that journalists are targeted, the call for immediate foreign media access to Gaza has garnered support from 27 countries, including the UK. With casualties in Gaza continuing to rise since the 2023 offensive, there is a pressing need for independent journalists to provide accurate and comprehensive coverage of the conflict
