The upcoming court appearance of a British couple detained in Iran has left their family feeling completely uninformed about the situation. Lindsay and Craig Foreman, who hail from East Sussex, were taken into custody by Iranian officials in January while on a motorcycle journey around the world. They were later accused of espionage, a charge vehemently denied by their family.
Their son, Joe Bennett, expressed deep concern over the conditions his parents were enduring, stating that they were facing severe human rights violations. He urged the UK government to take action in support of his parents. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has been urged to provide clarity on the matter.
Mr. Bennett disclosed that the family was notified of the couple’s upcoming court appearance scheduled for Saturday in Iran. This development follows a sudden court appearance about a month earlier, which caught the family off guard. Despite repeated attempts, they have not been given any details regarding the legal proceedings.
In a statement released by the couple’s family, it was revealed that a letter signed by 35 MPs and members of the all-parliamentary group for arbitrary detention and hostage affairs was sent to Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper. Moreover, a meeting with the UK Ambassador to Iran, Hugo Shorter, reiterated the couple’s harsh conditions in prison. Mr. Bennett emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that his parents required immediate support for their court appearances, medical attention, family contact, and most importantly, their release.
