Disruption at Stansted Airport with cancelled trains and fire

Wednesday morning brought chaos to London Stansted Airport as all train lines leading into the airport were either cancelled or disrupted due to signalling issues. National Rail confirmed that the fault with the signalling system was impacting CrossCountry services between Birmingham New Street and Stansted, as well as Greater Anglia services to and from the airport and London Liverpool Street. The disruption was expected to persist until 08:00 BST, according to National Rail.

In addition to the train disruptions, there were significant delays on the M11 and M25 in Essex, potentially causing further inconvenience for passengers traveling to and from the airport. A small fire in the airport’s Escape Lounge added to the chaos, resulting in delays in the security area, as confirmed by a spokesperson for Stansted.

Emergency crews responded to the fire in the Escape Lounge, which emitted a substantial amount of smoke, prompting the closure of a section of the airport at 03:30. The airport fire service promptly extinguished the fire, and fortunately, there were no reported injuries to any passengers. Although security operations were briefly halted, they resumed at 06:00; however, the airport advised passengers to anticipate delays and check the status of their flights before heading to the airport.

Despite the challenges posed by the signalling issues, the fire incident, and the subsequent delays, Stansted Airport assured passengers that safety and security were their top priorities. As operations gradually resumed and normalcy was restored, the airport staff continued to work diligently to ensure that passengers were kept informed and assisted during this tumultuous period
