Liverpool is known for its iconic Liver Birds, but now a third bird has joined them to deliver an important message to the city’s residents. The giant sculpture, made from recyclable items, is aimed at raising awareness about proper recycling practices in Liverpool. This initiative is part of Recycle Week, running from 22-28 September.
Currently, Liverpool is ranked as the second lowest city in the country for recycling rates, with only 17.9% of household waste being recycled, composted, or reused. This falls far below the national average of 42%. A recent survey conducted by the council revealed that one in five people are still disposing of recyclable items in their general waste bins, highlighting the need for improved public awareness on recycling.
To combat this issue, Liverpool City Council has launched the “We’re Talking Bins” campaign to educate residents on what items should be placed in the blue recycling bins. The giant ‘Liver Bird’ sculpture, constructed by local artist Faith Bebbington, is made up of recyclable materials like cans, glass bottles, cardboard boxes, egg cartons, and plastic bottles.
As part of Liverpool’s effort to boost recycling rates, a new food waste collection service is being introduced to approximately 15,000 households. This service will allow residents to recycle unwanted food and leftovers, contributing to reducing carbon dioxide emissions released into the atmosphere. The food waste will be recycled through anaerobic digestion, where microorganisms break down the waste to generate biogas for energy.
Councillor Laura Robertson-Collins, the Cabinet Member for Communities, Neighbourhoods, and Streetscene, emphasized the importance of local residents taking control of their recycling habits.
