Jack Thorne, the writer of the popular Netflix show Adolescence, has commended the journalists who uncovered the phone-hacking scandal in the media. The upcoming ITV drama, The Hack, features David Tennant portraying Nick Davies, the Guardian reporter who revealed the phone-hacking practices at the News of the World. Thorne shared on BBC Radio 4’s Today that the show delves deeper into the intricate relationship between the press, politics, and the police, beyond just journalists behaving badly.
The closure of the News of the World in 2011 came after revelations that journalists from the paper had hacked the phones of public figures to obtain exclusive stories. Notably, the hacking of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler’s voicemails created widespread outrage as it misled her parents into believing she was still alive. Thorne, collaborating with the team behind Mr Bates vs The Post Office, highlighted the difference in impact between journalistic work and dramatizations, emphasizing the celebration of journalists holding their industry accountable.
The Hack tells the story from two perspectives – Davies as the journalist reporting on the scandal, and police detective Dave Cook, played by Robert Carlyle, who investigated private investigator Daniel Morgan’s murder. Tennant, like many other public figures, settled with News Group Newspapers over the phone hacking scandal. Thorne’s previous show Adolescence, which swept up at the recent Emmy Awards, explored the dark consequences of social media on teenagers. Thorne hinted at future collaborations that shed light on different aspects of society like they did with Adolescence.
The Hack premieres on Wednesday, 24 September at 21:00 BST on ITV1 and ITVX, offering audiences a look into the scandal that shook the media industry and the journalists who brought it to light. The show promises to be a gripping portrayal of the dynamics between the media, politics, and law enforcement surrounding the phone-hacking scandal that made headlines in 2011
