In response to over 20 hours of heavy rainfall, 28 flood warnings were issued across various areas in north-west England, leaving several streets submerged and cars abandoned in Altrincham and Salford in Greater Manchester. A major standby incident was declared in Warrington, Cheshire, before being downgraded. The downpours prompted the Environment Agency to issue alerts for areas like Trafford, Stockport, and south Manchester in Greater Manchester, as well as other places in Cheshire, Merseyside, and Lancashire.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service came to the aid of three men who were trapped in a car engulfed by floodwater in Swinton, Salford just after 04:00 BST. By late Sunday morning, all warnings were removed by the Environment Agency as water levels subsided. Penketh resident Raymond Wright described the situation as “scary” due to the rising water levels on their flooded road and mentioned that the drains were not handling the excess water effectively.
Despite the challenges faced, residents felt fortunate as a local councillor organized a pump to help alleviate the flooding. Furthermore, three warnings were issued around Warrington, including at the Sankey Brook, along with alerts in Lancashire and Merseyside. Sandbags were distributed in Penketh, and Warrington South MP Sarah Hall urged people to remain vigilant until the water levels returned to normal. The Environment Agency advised residents and business owners to take action to prevent property damage in the face of the expected flooding.
Various alerts were also in place across different parts of Merseyside, including Liverpool and the Wirral. In Lancashire, areas around the River Darwen and Waterfall were on high alert. Adding to the complications, a severe yellow weather warning for heavy rain was issued by the Met Office, which was in effect from 09:00 BST on Saturday until 06:00 BST on Sunday. Residents were encouraged to stay informed by checking the latest weather warnings on the Environment Agency’s website
