Seals at risk from plastic flying rings on council beaches
A council in Neath Port Talbot is taking action to protect seals by banning plastic flying rings from its beaches. The decision comes after concerns were raised about the dangers posed to seals when these rings become trapped around their necks, often leading to fatal consequences.
Councillor Robert Wood brought attention to the issue and urged the council to discourage the use of flying rings at Aberavon Beach and Small Beach, also known as Little Warren. The council members also supported a campaign for a UK-wide ban on flying rings, with council leader Steve Hunt being asked to write to the Welsh and UK governments to advocate for a legislative ban.
The move by Neath Port Talbot Council follows similar actions taken by other councils in England and Wales, as well as voluntary agreements by retailers like Tesco and Sainsbury’s to stop selling these toys that can cause serious harm to seals. While the ban in Neath Port Talbot is voluntary and does not carry any penalties for non-compliance, it is hoped that it will garner support from retailers and the public to protect the marine animals.
Councillor Wood emphasized the importance of safeguarding seals, noting that a significant portion of the north Atlantic Grey seals can be found in the UK, making south Wales a key area for their conservation. He highlighted the risk posed to young seals by flying rings, which can lead to injury, infection, and even death. The cost of rehabilitating an injured animal can be substantial, reaching up to £15,000.
The initiative to ban plastic flying rings on council beaches has received unanimous support from Neath Port Talbot Council, aligning with efforts undertaken by other local authorities like Swansea and Vale of Glamorgan councils. The widespread public concern over the issue is evident, with over 43,000 people signing a national petition and endorsing the campaign led by the UK Seal Alliance to eliminate these harmful toys from coastal areas
