Store loses licence after illegal vape seizure

A store in West Derby recently had its license revoked by the courts for selling illicit vapes. Liverpool City Council’s Alcohol and Tobacco Unit began investigating Booze Butler on Queens Drive due to suspicions of the store selling unregulated vapes. Upon inspection, authorities found a significant quantity of vapes hidden inside the store with an estimated value of £3,500. Despite receiving warning letters, the store owner continued with the illegal sales, prompting the Council to seek a closure order through Liverpool Magistrates Court.

Upon issuing the closure notice, it was discovered that the sole staff member on duty did not have the legal right to work in the UK. Consequently, the store’s license was revoked as a measure to prevent further criminal activities. Unregulated vapes may contain prohibited substances, posing a serious health hazard to consumers. Regulations governing vape sales are outlined in the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations of 2016, which stipulate specific criteria such as e-cigarette tank capacity, refill container volume, and nicotine strength limitations.

Furthermore, it has been illegal since June of this year for businesses to sell disposable vapes under The Environmental Protection (Single-Use Vapes) (England) Regulations of 2024. The Council reported seizing over 32,000 illicit vapes and cigarettes from various businesses in the previous financial year, amounting to a total value of £378,000. Councillor Harry Doyle, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing, and Culture, emphasized the importance of abiding by vape regulations to safeguard public health. Doyle affirmed that the Council would diligently investigate and take action against any business found violating these regulations to protect the community and ensure the safe acquisition of vapes from reputable retailers
