MI6 launches dark web portal to attract spies in Russia

MI6 has unveiled a new initiative to recruit spies through a dedicated portal on the dark web, with a specific focus on targeting potential agents from Russia. The secure messaging platform Silent Courier is being introduced to make it easier for the intelligence agency to attract new recruits, as stated by the Foreign Office. This strategic move is aimed at strengthening national security by expanding the reach of UK intelligence operations globally, starting with efforts in Russia.

The upcoming announcement regarding the launch of the new portal is expected to be made by the outgoing MI6 chief Sir Richard Moore during a speech in Istanbul on Friday morning. Following this, Sir Richard is set to hand over his position to Blaise Metreweli later in the month. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper emphasized the critical importance of national security and the continuous need for the UK to stay ahead of evolving threats, highlighting the role of intelligence agencies in safeguarding the country.

Individuals interested in securely sharing sensitive information related to terrorism or hostile intelligence activities will have access to the portal starting from Friday. Guidelines on how to utilize the platform will be made available on MI6’s official YouTube channel. It is advised for users to ensure their anonymity by using reputable VPN services and devices unconnected to their personal identities. This initiative follows a similar approach taken by the US’s Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in targeting potential Russian spies through social media videos back in 2023, after experiencing a significant security breach involving agents in China
