Two British Royal Air Force (RAF) Typhoon jets are set to join Nato allies in safeguarding Polish airspace in response to a recent breach by Russian drones, the UK defence secretary has announced. This move comes as part of the military alliance’s efforts to strengthen the eastern flank and ensure the security of member countries. Other allies, including Denmark, Germany, and France, are already actively participating in this mission, with a French jet being scrambled earlier in response to another potential Russian drone incursion.
The deployment of Typhoon jets will be based out of RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire, with missions expected to commence in the upcoming days. The RAF Voyager air-to-air refuelling aircraft will provide support for these operations, which will see the UK aircraft working alongside Danish F-16s, French Rafales, and German Eurofighters. The UK defence secretary emphasized the unity within Nato, highlighting that the response to the Russian actions is a collective effort aimed at safeguarding the security of member nations.
The escalating tensions in Europe follow the incident where 19 Russian drones entered Polish airspace, prompting accusations from Poland against Russia. The Kremlin has denied any deliberate involvement in the breach, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation to ascertain the nature of the incident. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer stressed the significance of the UK’s participation in deterring aggression and securing Nato airspace to protect national security and that of its allies.
In a separate development, a Russian drone also breached Romanian airspace, according to reports from Romanian defence authorities. This incident underscores the challenges faced by Nato member countries in maintaining their borders against potential threats. The show of solidarity and swift response from Nato signifies a united front in the face of external provocations
