Liverpool City Council has expressed its approval of the Government’s decision to implement the Hillsborough Law, which signifies a significant milestone in the ongoing pursuit of justice, transparency, and accountability in the aftermath of the tragic events of the Hillsborough disaster in 1989.
This legislation, which will establish a legal obligation of candor for public officials and ensure equal legal representation for grieving families, is the result of relentless advocacy by the families, survivors, and allies throughout the country.
Councilor Liam Robinson, the Leader of Liverpool City Council, remarked, “Today is a momentous occasion for the families impacted by the Hillsborough tragedy and for our entire city. The introduction of the Hillsborough Law represents a long-awaited stride towards justice, transparency, and accountability. It is a tribute to the bravery and perseverance of the families and all those who have tirelessly campaigned for decades.” He added, “This law not only acknowledges their struggle but also paves the way for a more equitable future for others seeking justice. Liverpool City Council embraces its enactment and pledges full support for its enforcement as it becomes law.”
In July 2025, the City Council unanimously approved a cross-party resolution calling on the Government to enact the Hillsborough Law in its entirety, as initially proposed in 2017. The resolution reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to standing alongside the Hillsborough families and advocates to ensure the law is implemented without any dilution
