Wind and rain to hit UK as weather warnings issued

The UK is bracing for stormy weather as strong winds and heavy rain are forecast to sweep across the country. A Met Office Yellow wind warning has been issued for most of England and all of Wales until 18:00 BST Monday. Coastal gales may develop, bringing large waves to southern and western shores, with the possibility of travel disruption and power cuts.

Sunday began dry for many, but heavy outbreaks of rain are expected to move in from the west throughout the day, reaching eastern England and central Scotland by late afternoon. Winds will also strengthen, particularly in southwest England, where coastal gales are likely. As the night progresses into Monday, gusts of up to 45-55mph inland and 60-70mph on coasts and hills are anticipated. The risk of heavy rain with 10-30mm widely and up to 70mm in western hills could result in surface water flooding and challenging driving conditions.

Although the storm is not currently expected to be named by the Met Office, there is a small chance it could be named by Ireland’s Met Éireann or the Netherlands’ KNMI if the forecast changes in those regions. The naming of storms is typically associated with medium to high impacts, with the first name in this season’s list being ‘Amy.’ Looking ahead, the transition from summer to autumn is likely to bring more unsettled and stormy weather as the jet stream moves further south and strengthens. The outlook for the autumn months suggests an increased chance of wetter than average conditions in the UK until November, although seasonal forecasts come with a level of uncertainty. While there may not be a repeat of the record-breaking rainfall seen in September 2024, the UK should be prepared for wetter weather in the coming months
