Conservative MP Danny Kruger shocked political observers by announcing his defection to Reform UK, making him the first sitting Conservative MP to do so. Having served as an MP since 2019 and being a shadow work and pensions minister on Tory leader Kemi Badenoch’s team, Kruger made the announcement alongside Reform party leader Nigel Farage. “The Conservatives are over,” Kruger boldly declared during a press conference, expressing his willingness to assist Reform in preparing for government and his hope for Farage to become the next prime minister.
In a surprising turn of events, the East Wiltshire MP, a once close ally of former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, criticized his former party, stating that the Conservatives are no longer the main opposition party. Reflecting on his time as a member of the Tory party, Kruger admitted to moments of pride, but ultimately denounced the party’s track record of failure during their time in office. He pointed to issues such as bigger government, social decline, lower wages, higher taxes, and a disconnect from the desires of ordinary citizens as reasons for his departure. Kruger proclaimed, “This is my tragic conclusion, the Conservative Party is over as a national party, over as the principal opposition to the left.”
Despite expressing his respect for Badenoch, Kruger emphasized the toxic nature of the Tory party’s brand, citing a year of inaction and lack of bold decision-making. Describing his departure from a party he had been a member of for two decades as “personally painful,” Kruger outlined his mission with Reform as not just seeking to overthrow the current system, but to restore what he believes is necessary for the country. His decision to join Reform UK follows in the footsteps of Lee Anderson, another sitting MP who left the Tories to join Reform in 2024. Prior to his political career, Kruger had served as a speechwriter for former Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron.
Kruger’s controversial stances on issues such as abortion and traditional family values have garnered attention in the past. In a 2022 Parliamentary debate, he expressed his disagreement with the idea of pregnant women having an “absolute right to bodily autonomy” and questioned the UK’s stance on the US’s abortion ban. Additionally, at a National Conservatism Conference in 2023, organized by a right-wing think tank from the United States, Kruger made remarks about the importance of conventional family values in society. He argued that marriages between men and women are crucial for a safe and successful society, a viewpoint that was met with disapproval from then-Prime Minister Rishi Sunak
