Gloucestershire man completes 3,700 mile walk in teenager's memory

Dickie Mackness of Lower Swell in Gloucestershire has completed an incredible journey, walking a total of 3,714 miles around the UK over a period of two years. His trek took him along England’s south coast, through Wales, and spanning the length of Hadrian’s Wall. This monumental effort was undertaken to raise funds for The Evie Dove Foundation, a charity established in memory of 13-year-old Evie Dove from Kent, who passed away from a brain tumor in 2022.

Mr. Mackness’s journey came to an emotional conclusion at The Big Coastal Walk in Hythe, Kent, an event organized by the charity, on the 6th of September. Along the way, he received donations from both strangers he encountered during his travels and through his online fundraising page. He expressed his gratitude for the support he received, highlighting the themes of courage, kindness, and community that defined his experience.

The funds raised by Dickie Mackness will be utilized by The Evie Dove Foundation to provide specialized training for healthcare professionals working with children facing serious and chronic illnesses. Kelly Terranova, the foundation’s marketing manager, commended Mr. Mackness for his determination and resilience, acknowledging the significant impact his efforts have made. The foundation, established in the wake of Evie Dove’s passing, has already benefitted over 180 healthcare workers across the United Kingdom with its initiatives
