A clinical facility billed as the most advanced in the southern hemisphere for amputees has opened in South Africa.
The Amputee Rehabilitation Centre, in the city of Johannesburg, provides state-of-the-art prosthetics that use sensors to detect changes in muscle activity and weight distribution, enabling wearers to walk more naturally than ever before.
“This clinic enables us to provide life-changing prosthetics to patients at a level of sophistication that has never been possible before in our population,” said Dr Jacques Viljoen, specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the centre.
“Not only are our prosthetics more advanced, but the opportunity to work with leading therapists and researchers means that amputees visiting our clinic can benefit from the most up-to-date advances in rehabilitation technology.”
The centre also provides psychological support to help patients overcome the emotional impact of losing a limb.
