Nigel Farage insists he has no financial stake in Clacton home

Nigel Farage has recently faced questions regarding a house purchased by his partner in his Clacton constituency. The Reform UK leader has maintained that he has no financial stake in the property, emphasizing that it was bought using his partner’s own funds. The house, located in Frinton-on-Sea, Essex, was acquired for £885,000 without the need for a mortgage.

Concerns arose after a BBC investigation raised doubts about how Farage’s partner, Laure Ferrari, could afford such an expensive property. There were speculations that Farage might have avoided over £44,000 in stamp duty by putting the house in his partner’s name. However, Farage has dismissed these claims, asserting that the purchase was entirely funded by Ms. Ferrari without his financial involvement.

Stamp duty, a tax applicable when purchasing a property above a certain value, is imposed in England and Northern Ireland. Farage would have been subject to a higher rate of stamp duty if he had bought the house himself due to owning another property. He suggested that Ms. Ferrari’s affluent background enabled her to afford the house, considering her wealthy French family. Despite this, investigations into French property and company records have failed to establish evidence supporting Ms. Ferrari’s family’s financial capacity to facilitate the home purchase.

Following his election as the MP for Clacton, Farage initially claimed to have bought a residence in the constituency. However, it was later revealed that his partner was the sole owner of the £885,000 house, purchased outright without a mortgage. In response to accusations of misleading the public, Farage’s solicitors have stated that expert tax advice confirmed no underpayment of stamp duty or improper tax evasion related to the property acquisition
