Liverpool shortlisted as European Capital of Innovation

Liverpool is currently a contender for the title of European Capital of Innovation 2026, as it has advanced to the semifinals of the esteemed competition. The city has been selected as a finalist in the 2026 European Capital of Innovation Awards (iCapital), alongside five other cities from various parts of Europe – Alicante, Grenoble, Riga, Rotterdam, and The Hague. This recognition follows a thorough evaluation process by two independent panels of experts.

This exciting development coincides with the ongoing British Science Festival being hosted in Liverpool this week, highlighting the city’s focus on science. Additionally, the recent announcement that this year’s River of Light Festival will also feature a scientific theme further showcases Liverpool’s commitment to innovation. Liverpool has also been acknowledged as the world’s first UN Accelerator City on Climate Change.

Under Horizon Europe, the European Innovation Council (EIC) supports the iCapital competition, which aims to acknowledge cities that embrace experimental governance practices and strive to be models for innovation for the betterment of their residents. Liverpool’s bid, named ‘LIFE’ – Liverpool Innovates For Everyone, underscores the city’s dedication to inclusive innovation.

The recipient of the European Capital of Innovation title will be awarded €1 million, joining previous winners like Barcelona, Amsterdam, and Lisbon. There will also be two runners-up, each receiving a prize of €100,000. Moving forward, each city will have the opportunity to participate in a private hearing with the jury members to present their application and address any queries related to the award criteria. The winners and runners-up from each category will be declared at an awards ceremony in Turin, Italy, the current European Capital of Innovation.

Leader of Liverpool City Council, Councillor Liam Robinson, expressed pride in Liverpool’s abundance of innovation assets and organizations driving advancements for the betterment of society. Being named European Capital of Innovation would fortify Liverpool’s reputation as a beacon of innovation and an advocate of best practices. Colin Sinclair, chief executive of Knowledge Quarter Liverpool, conveyed delight in Liverpool’s international recognition for its commitment to inclusive innovation and looks forward to leveraging this achievement for future success
