Former Premier League referee, David Coote, has entered a plea of not guilty to a charge of making an indecent image of a child. The 43-year-old was charged on August 12 after an investigation by Nottinghamshire Police. The allegation is said to be related to a video file that was recovered by officers in February. Despite the charges, ex-official Mr. Coote appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
During the 18-minute hearing, Mr. Coote only spoke to confirm his name, date of birth, and enter his plea. He was granted conditional bail and is set to appear at Nottingham Crown Court on October 9. The charge of making an indecent image of a child encompasses activities such as downloading, sharing, or saving abusive photos or videos.
In December, Mr. Coote was dismissed by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) after a video surfaced of comments he made about former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp in 2020. Furthermore, he was banned by Uefa until June 30, 2026. Despite these setbacks, Mr. Coote continues to maintain his innocence in the recent charge brought against him.
