River of Light Returns with Scientific Glow-Up

Liverpool’s iconic waterfront will once again be transformed into an outdoor art gallery for the River of Light festival in 2025. The festival, known for its large-scale light artworks, will take place from October 24 to November 2. This year’s theme is “The Science of Light,” with each installation drawing inspiration from science, technology, or nature.

Collaborating with the city’s science and innovation community, the festival aims to captivate visitors with a 3km trail along the waterfront, including locations like the Royal Albert Dock and Liverpool ONE. Among the highlights of the program are “Face Value” by scientist Emma Brass, “Dandelion” by Australian artists Amigo and Amigo, and “Within Water” by New York design firm Yellow Studios.

Visitors can find more information about the festival, including the artworks, locations, and opening times, on the River of Light website. Additionally, there will be quiet hours sessions for visitors with additional sensory needs to enjoy the artworks in a calmer environment. Last year’s festival saw record-breaking attendance and a significant boost to the local economy.

Organized by Liverpool City Council’s Culture Liverpool team, the event is supported by various partners, including the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, Global Streets, and the Leverhulme Research Centre for Functional Materials Design at the University of Liverpool. Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing, and Culture, Councillor Harry Doyle, expressed excitement for the festival and its positive impact on the local economy.

Emma Brass, the scientist and artist behind one of the installations, highlighted the collaborative effort that went into creating an interactive piece that merges art and science. Royal Albert Dock Estate Manager, Sean Morrison, emphasized the festival’s importance in celebrating shared heritage and world-class art. Colin Sinclair, CEO of Sciontec and Knowledge Quarter Liverpool, praised the festival’s focus on science and innovation, showcasing Liverpool’s global importance in these fields
