QM2 arrival marks maritime milestone celebrations

Liverpool is gearing up to pay tribute to Cunard’s 185th anniversary with a series of celebratory events this month. This milestone highlights the longstanding relationship between the city and the renowned cruise line. The festivities will kick off with the arrival of the Queen Mary 2 (QM2) in Liverpool on September 17th for a two-night stay at Liverpool Cruise Port. This visit not only recognizes Liverpool as the birthplace of the Cunard line but also commemorates the unique honor bestowed upon Queen Anne by the city last year, marking a significant departure from traditional godparent naming ceremonies.

In addition to celebrating Cunard’s 185th anniversary, the events will also mark a decade since the cruise line was granted the Freedom of the City during the memorable Three Queens event in 2015. This grand gathering of the Cunard fleet drew over one million spectators to the River Mersey, paying tribute to the historic departure of the Britannia from Liverpool in 1840, which marked the first transatlantic crossing by a Cunard ship. The highlights of the upcoming celebrations on September 18th and 19th include a Civic Reception at Liverpool Town Hall to welcome Captain Tomás Connery and senior officers, recognizing Cunard’s enduring connection to the city and its status as a Freedom of the City recipient.

Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing, and Culture, Councillor Harry Doyle, emphasized the deep connection between Liverpool and Cunard, spanning nearly two centuries. He highlighted the city’s pivotal role in many significant moments in Cunard’s history, from the Three Queens event to the naming of Queen Anne. Katie McAlister, President of Cunard, echoed these sentiments, describing Liverpool as the spiritual home of Cunard and expressing gratitude for the opportunity to celebrate the 185th anniversary in the city. Angie Redhead, Culture Liverpool’s Head of Operations, emphasized the importance of Cunard visits in showcasing Liverpool’s identity, fostering key relationships, and creating lasting memories for residents and visitors, while also helping drive tourism and economic development in the city
