Londoners are facing continued disruption as most London Underground services remain suspended due to a staff walkout that has now entered its fourth day. The Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) members are engaged in a “rolling strike” as they push for better pay and a shorter working week of 32 hours. While some Northern line services were operational on Tuesday, the majority of the Tube network remained closed, and the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) was also suspended due to a separate dispute.
Transport for London (TfL) had offered a 3.4% pay rise to the staff but deemed the demand for a shorter working week as unaffordable. This has led to depot managers and signallers from the RMT joining the strike, further impacting the transportation network in the capital. In response to the disruptions, Londoners have been resorting to alternative modes of transport such as boats, bikes, and buses, with a notable increase in the use of bike rental schemes.
Calls for negotiations have been made by both the prime minister and the mayor of London after talks between the two sides broke down last Wednesday.
