Sarah Smith, North America Editor for BBC News, reported that Lord Mandelson referred to the late convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein as his “best pal” in a letter found in an alleged “birthday book” released by US lawmakers. In the message written for Epstein’s 50th birthday in 2003, Lord Mandelson, who currently serves as the UK ambassador to the US, described Epstein as an “intelligent, sharp-witted man” who unexpectedly entered his life.
The existence of the letter from Lord Mandelson was initially brought to light by the Wall Street Journal in July, when details of the alleged birthday note were made public. An official spokesperson for Lord Mandelson acknowledged the letter’s existence and expressed regret on behalf of Lord Mandelson, stating, “Lord Mandelson has long been clear that he very much regrets ever having been introduced to Epstein.”
In addition to the letter from Lord Mandelson, Democrats in Congress released copies of the so-called “birthday book” after the documents were subpoenaed by the House Oversight Committee last month. Within the documents was also a note containing a drawing of a woman’s body purportedly signed by US President Donald Trump – a claim that the White House vehemently denied, asserting that the president did not create the drawing nor sign it.
The “birthday book” was compiled by Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s British co-conspirator and former girlfriend, who was convicted in 2021 of conspiring to traffic girls for sex. The book is dated three years prior to the allegations of sex abuse by Epstein becoming public in 2006. When asked for comment, Lord Mandelson’s spokesperson highlighted that his connection to Epstein has been public knowledge for some time and pointed to previous statements made by Lord Mandelson expressing regret over meeting Epstein
