How BBC team exposed illegal Snapchat sales of spice-laced vapes

Under the warm spring sun of Warwickshire, I find myself parked in a nondescript hatchback with my cameraman, preparing to rendezvous with a drug dealer. This particular dealer has promised THC vape liquids to my colleague, a schoolgirl undercover BBC reporter, who has been interacting with him via Snapchat. Suspicions are high that the vape liquids actually contain spice, a more potent and addictive substance with severe side effects. Our investigation into these drug dealers selling spice-laced vape liquid to unsuspecting teenagers came to light after an undercover operation where we exposed their activities.

Approximately a year ago, my attention was drawn to social media posts by two concerned mothers whose teenage daughters, at just 13 years old, were vaping what they believed to be THC. These daughters eventually became addicted, exhibiting behaviors consistent with spice use, leaving their parents fearing for their lives. Despite reaching out to the authorities a year prior, these dealers were still freely operating on the streets. Utilizing the information provided by these mothers, we initiated contact with a seller frequented by their daughters.

The dealer we engaged with on Snapchat featured a newly created account after the previous one had been banned. A menu was requested, and a colorful price list for THC products was promptly provided. Payments of £10 for a “special mixed flavor” bottle or £20 for “pure concentrated THC” were outlined, with delivery services across Birmingham and Warwickshire available. As the transaction unfolded, it resembled a routine pizza order, with our team preparing to meet the dealer at the agreed location.

In a tranquil suburban setting within a housing estate, our colleague, posing as the schoolgirl client, engaged with the dealer. Disguised in youthful attire and carrying her phone and vape, she seamlessly navigated the encounter, all while maintaining communication with our team. As the tension mounted and the moment of exchange approached, a white SUV arrived, signaling the culmination of our operation. Conversations flowed, cash exchanged hands, and soon after, the delivery of vape juice bottles was completed. Subsequent tests confirmed the presence of spice in the purchased bottles, exposing the illegal activities of these dealers and the dangers they pose to young consumers
